Q. What is your motto or maxim?

A. I may not agree with a word you say, but would defend to the death your right to say it was Voltaire's first, but it's a good one!

Q. What’s your fantasy profession?

A. Writing! Really. When I was five I wanted to be a ballet dancer, but by six the dream job was set.

A. Loyalty, humour and dedication

Q. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you choose to be?

A. on a cruise ship around the Caribbean islands, with Jake Gyllenhall naturally by my side, bringing me an iced lemonade

A. The Little Things by Danny Elfman, Venetia Teng's Harbour, The Book of Love by such heights, Hero by Bonnie Tyler, So Macho by sinitta. (I'm not kidding about those last two!)

When people talk about being a writer, the first words that come to mind are glamour and artistic parties like Charles Dickens used to mix cocktails for. Whether you're starving in a garret or living in a castle like JK Rowling, I had this image of the author as a flawless, composed individual, serene in the knowledge they were creating art.
