This volume contains 21 papers presented at the international conference ‘Art and Society: Ancient and Modern Contexts of Egyptian Art’, held in May 2010 in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest. The first set of papers addresses issues how ancient Egyptian works of art, artistic forms and devices were perceived and re-used by ancient and modern artists and beholders. In the second set of papers aspects of ancient Egyptian sculpture and minor arts are dealt with in their artistic, social and historical contexts. The third section discusses issues of presentation and self-presentation through the study of iconography and of the composition of funerary equipment. The fourth group of papers centres on artists and artistic production.
