About The Book
The summer Emma McKinney turns fifteen, hope feels fragile. Her father is missing in action in Vietnam, and her mother—seeking escape as much as stability—accepts a teaching job in a remote mountain town. Emma, sensitive and intelligent, senses her mother has other reasons for their stay in Silverveil. Before she can press for answers, Emma is sent away to a youth group retreat with only her father's worn copy of The Call of the Wild for comfort.
On the last day of the retreat, Emma strays from the trail and becomes hopelessly lost. With no clear path back to camp, she relies on instinct, animal signs, and the vast, unyielding wild for guidance. As days go by and exhaustion, hunger, and fear begin to hollow her out, Emma’s fate feels uncertain. But she is not alone. Deep in the woods, another teenage girl is keeping watch—resourceful and determined to remain unseen. As they move through the same wilderness, their stories begin to collide, forcing them to discover their strength and will to survive.
Aching and gritty, Heart of the Wild is an atmospheric journey not only of perseverance, but of self-discovery and secrets whose roots run much deeper than just the forest floor.

Raves and Reviews
"I am a fan of all of Patti Callahan Henry's books, but I cannot remember ever being so fully invested in the characters so immediately. This book is special, it is an immediate grab at the heart. The connections between the characters are so authentic, heartfelt, and strong you are rooting for them all. These are characters you will learn from about how to do life the right way—how to love, how to trust, and how to show grace. The best book I have read in a while. It's a real standout.” – Kelly Coyle, The Little Point Bookshop
“Patti Callahan Henry has a gift for creating settings that linger long after the final page, and Heart of the Wild is no exception. The story is further enriched by the mystical power of the wilderness itself, where ancient wisdom and the untamed spirit of the natural world help guide its characters toward survival and healing. Equal parts coming-of-age story, survival tale, and testament to female resilience, this novel celebrates women who survive, endure, and become the rescuers of themselves and one another.” – Robin O'Bryant, Auburn Oil Booksellers
"There isn’t room here to list all the incredibly powerful emotions throughout Heart of the Wild but courage, self-awareness, and forgiveness are a few to start. Patti Callahan Henry has created one of the most suspenseful stories of the year as a young girl faces terror in the forest but uses nature’s offerings to aid in the struggle. On a 1 – 10 scale, this rates a 20!” – Jake Reiss, The Alabama Booksmith
“Heart of the Wild kept me on the edge of my seat cheering on our teenage girl protagonist who is lost in the woods. Readers are in excellent hands with Henry's gorgeous descriptions of nature and the courage of a young woman coming of age in trying times." – Elizabeth Barnhill, Fabled Bookshop
“What I appreciate the most about Patti's storytelling is that regardless of the circumstances, her characters have unwavering hope and belief in themselves. Heart of the Wild brings hope and believing in yourself together with the miraculous power of reconciliation to make for an unforgettable reading experience.” – Beth Seufer Buss, Bookmarks
"Heart of the Wild will take you deep into the heart of the Nantahala forest, a place of unimaginable beauty and also extreme peril. Separated from her group on a weekend retreat, 14-year-old Emma spends four eventful days lost in the woods, where she has to draw on her inner strength — and inspiration from her dad, currently missing in action in Vietnam — to survive. All three characters are lost in their own ways, and this moving novel is about the journeys they each take — physical and spiritual — to get back to themselves.” – Lady Smith, Snail on the Wall
“Once again, Patti Callahan Henry delivers a beautifully crafted story—I don’t know how she does it. Heart of the Wild is a captivating read.” —Allen Levi, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Theo of Golden
