About The Book

The story a kitchen—and a family—that refuses to let the fire go out.

“I played with the last bowl.”

When Chef Mahmoud was killed, the Gaza Soup Kitchen could have closed. He was the heart of the operation, the one who fed the hungry when no one else could. But for his brother, Hani Almadhoun, closing was never an option. A Ladle against the Drones is the harrowing and hopeful account of the kitchen that won't close, even in the shadow of assassination, famine, and war.

By day, Hani works for UNRWA USA, addressing campuses and places of worship from Washington, DC to London, Amsterdam to Tokyo, and elsewhere in the world. By night, he manages a radical $15 million humanitarian lifeline, where 99% of every dollar goes directly to the ground in Gaza.

A Ladle against the Drones is a collection of stories that pierce the soul—tales of a family’s grief transformed into a community’s survival. It is a testament to human stepping-in, proving that even when the chefs are targeted, the line at dawn remains a place of dignity and life.
