About The Book

Poverty isn't an accident. It's a design.

Why do so many Americans work hard and still can't get ahead? George Gerharz takes on the common misconceptions about poverty, inequality, and social mobility in America.

Drawing on five decades of anti-poverty work and current research, Gerharz examines how the American social order and corporate power create and sustain inequality, stall upward mobility, and keep people trapped in poverty. He then lays out four practical strategies for building a more equal and economically mobile nation.

A clear-eyed look at why the system works the way it does, and what it would take to change it, for readers of books on poverty, economic inequality, social class, and the fight for opportunity in America.

About The Author

For over 50 years George Gerharz worked directly with and for low income individuals and households to develop programs and policies. His anti-poverty efforts focused on agency planning, program development, program evaluation, community development, coalition building, and program administration. His 2018 book, Show Me the Cash, focused on how families and government agencies could work together to help children in poverty succeed. In this book, Gerharz proposes solutions to inequality, lack of mobility, and poverty and examines how the US social order and corporate powers create these problems.
