The bird and flower painting, one of the three disciplines of traditional Chinese painting, expresses the diversity in humanity nature relations through various artistic languages and thus has been favoured by appreciators from all walks of life. This book centres on Emperor Zhao Ji, who was a master in bird and flower painting and established the Songdynasty Imperial Painting Academy. It interprets the interaction or teacher student relationship between the emperor and other painters and introduces the historical development of Chinese bird and flower painting. Well illustrated, this book is composed of two volumes respectively for research and appreciation. The first volume is coauthored by Yang Dong and Yu Hui; the second is printed in high resolution to present a panorama of the masterpiece.

Yang Dong, Ph.D. in Literature; Postdoctoral Researcher in History; Specializing in the history and theoretical research of New Year paintings; Member of the Theoretical Committee of the Sichuan Artists Association; Associate Director of the Folk Art Committee of the Sichuan Literary and Art Critics Association; Full-time Faculty member at the School of Fine Arts and Design, Chengdu University; Primary research: art history, folk art studies, and art criticism.
