About The Book

A Man Called Ove meets The Maid in the story of Felix Race, a superstitious widower who escapes to the Lake District with his dog in search of solitude and healing, only to find a waterlogged corpse, a trafficked teenager in hiding from the police and, ultimately, the strength to fight for what really matters.

When Felix’s wife Georgia dies unexpectedly, he can’t shake the feeling he could have prevented her death, if only he’d taken seriously the appearance of a solitary magpie that morning. He vows not to ignore any other signs from the universe, and, following the advice of a fortune teller, retreats to the Lake District to mourn.

But once ensconced in his holiday cottage, it quickly becomes clear that the universe has other plans for him. First, Felix stumbles across the body of the previous tenant. Then, he discovers that the dead man left behind a stowaway: a teen girl from Romania with no alibi for the murder, but an alarming amount of creativity and energy when it comes to personal defense. And to top it all off, Georgia’s old friends want to visit and “cheer him up.”

Felix reluctantly agrees to help the troubled girl avoid the police and prove her innocence, but despite following all of the superstitions he can think of, he has no idea that of the two of them, he might be the one in the greatest danger.
