About The Book

A counterintuitive career playbook that unpacks why staying in place can be your fastest path to success, from an acclaimed Wharton professor.

From freelancing to job-hopping, career paths seem to be more chaotic than ever. Conventional wisdom says mobility wins: stay too long and you’ll stall your growth and your pay. But what if the secret to a rewarding career isn’t leaving in search of the next best thing, but staying in it for the long-haul?

Wharton professor Matthew Bidwell argues that “insiders”—employees who see their careers within the context of an organization, rather than separate from it—have a competitive edge in today’s job market. The more time you invest at one employer, the more access you gain to the information and relationships that help you rise faster, adapt easier, and find real fulfillment in your work. Drawing from two decades of research and exclusive access to top executives, The Insider Advantage explores how to capitalize on your connections and knowledge to climb the ladder, boost your salary, and do truly meaningful work. You’ll also learn when to actually make the jump to a new company—though it won’t be when you think.

Blending expert insights and riveting stories, this field guide offers a surprising path to a thriving career, revealing that staying doesn’t hold you back—it’s your greatest advantage.
