July 19 — Frank McCourt, the former New York City schoolteacher whose book about his childhood in Ireland won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, passed away today.

Bakewise by Shirley O. Corriher (Scribner) is the 2009 James Beard Foundation Book Awards winner in the Baking and Dessert category. The James Beard Foundation Awards is the US’s most prestigious recognition program honoring professionals in the food and beverage industries. The awards were presented on Monday evening at a ceremony hosted by Cat Cora, Emeril Lagasse and Stanley Tucci in New York City.

The first book, entitled Peeny-Butter Fudge, will be published on September 9, 2009, and S&S holds world rights.
